I prefer not to be frozen at one point in time, like those citizens of Pompeii curled forever in mud-hollowed foetal positions. In fact, I like this concept so much, the idea of capturing snapshots, but in words, of places and people that I want to do it all the time. I do it sometimes on my blog, and then sometimes I just observe and file away the little things people do that make us human, yet individuals.

I’m a writer- that role has stretched from advertising copy to contributing to books. I have worked as a communications consultant for an environmental law NPO in recent months, and love the concept of being able to influence the way society and biodiversity interact. We’re not there yet, and the gulf between the ancient and modern is often as close as the people you pass on the street, or a short drive away from where you live.

I worked as a bookseller for many years, and as a result look for stories everywhere I go, and believe that South Africa has many Pompeiis to excavate- living and breathing ones, individuals whose roles and purposes are fascinating and quite unlike our own. I’m also a father. And if you want to be a great dad, you learn to listen to the stories your children invent, and teach them some of your own, whether family histories or crazy tales which open their minds to new worlds.

The truth can be stranger than fiction, but it is the search for this truth which keeps thinkers and creative people finding out new ways of prospecting.
