More About ART

Join Sally-Jane, or, as her friends know her, Pinkhairgirl, on a trip through South Africa on a journey of reflection on tragedies and challenges of the past, hopes and passion for the future, and a chance to discover the awesomeness that exists within each one of us.

Pinkhairgirl is passionate. Her resilience and recovery from personal experience have led her to a place where she is once more able to enjoy the kaleidoscope of human diversity, in the context of how people live in relationship with the land. She will explore how technologies and innovations have penetrated local communities, and how ordinary South Africans live; some enjoying the breakneck pace of life spent half in the future, others who embrace a lifestyle almost unaffected by time or invention.

South Africa is globally recognized for its diversity. The rainbow nation remains enigmatic in the tension between the traditional and the contemporary. And yet, within this tension, there are bonds common to lifestyles and human nature which are immediately evident. Pinkhairgirl is symbolic of that part of us which seeks to empathise, the part that can see beyond the outward appearances to the person within. She looks for our stories. The stories that, without which, our lives do indeed become meaningless. She is able to show the bonds that link us at every level, whether we are able to gather our sustenance at supermarkets, or if we have to nurture each meal from the land that supports us.

As Pinkhairgirl travels, we will learn of what has brought her to this point in her life. Her shocking and yet ordinary story will take us all on a journey of self-discovery, and, as she has managed to do, to find that which is awesome in the course of parenting and everyday life.

Pinkhairgirl is passionate about how we choose to live. About how those choices affect the environment in which we live. She will explore how far technology has penetrated into what are considered rural areas, and how it is changing the way the people of South Africa have been living life for centuries.

At the core of her passion is a desire to test how far we are able to conduct our lives in a Green way. Are organic farming practices and industries only aimed at the wealthy? What impact does choosing to live in a way that focuses on sustainability have on society and the earth that sustains it? Is sustainability a grand idea with no foundation in reality, or can we, as South Africans, choose to live in harmony with the environment and those around us?

Pinkhairgirl will look at specific technologies, products, initiatives and inventions to see how they work in practice, and at the same time learn the stories of those who live amongst us, often with remarkable yet untold stories.

At the end of the trip, a trip that is a journey of self-discovery to which there is no final conclusion, you will have learned about South Africa. The people, the places and how you yourself fit into a bigger picture, a picture that does not remain static, but shifts as timelessly as the seasons.
